Marble Fountain is back, 29.08.2018

The Marble Fountain in the Private Garden of the Catherine Park saw its opening yesterday, August 28th, after a thirty-year sleep and over six-month restoration.

The nineteenth-century Carrara marble fountain jetted water into the air to the music of Tchaikovsky and Bellini, with an exquisite dance performance by the young artists of Alexandra Antonelli’s Imperial School of Russian Ballet (see left).

Our garden and park department decorated the fountain’s jardinière-like sides with eighty eight white, blue and pink hydrangeas.

The only large fountain of Tsarskoe Selo was built in 1866 to a design by architect Alexander Vidov and sculptor Grazioso Botta. Its octagonal basin with flowerpots and central bowl were produced at the Peterhof Lapidary Works.

Fortunately almost unscathed during WWII, the fountain spent decades in disrepair before the 16 million rouble restoration project began in late 2016 by the Tsarskoe Selo Amber Workshop, whose masters are famous for re-creating the legendary Amber Room.
